California Rethinks Building Codes for EV Owners 30-09-2014

California is taking further steps to embrace electric vehicles. The California Building Code (CBC2016) is looking into requiring electric vehicle charging infrastructure in newly-developed parking lots or housing structures. According to a recent report, the request was found in draft building code documents and specifies the conduit and electrical system calculations required for charging stations, rather than mandating charging station installation. Currently, adding the capability for an EV charging station can be costly, potentially requiring trenching to run new conduit for the electrical wiring as well as changes to the service panel to accommodate the additional power needed to run the charging stations. With the new building code requirements, the foundation for electric charging stations will already be in place and an estimated cost for the conduit and related hardware is around $50. If the requirement becomes law, it would be a huge benefit to California as the state continues to lead the way with electric vehicle adoption.
